Course Descriptions

 

 YEAR ONE:

BIB101: BIBLICAL BACKGROUNDS

Description: A survey course that explores the geography, history, and cultural aspects of the Ancient Near East. Emphasis is placed on studying the biblical-historical timeline, retaining knowledge of geographical places in the Ancient Near East, and understanding how the civilizations and people groups of the Ancient Near East interacted with the Israelites.



BIB102: INTRODUCTION TO BIBLICAL RESEARCH

Description: A course that teaches effective biblical research and writing, in order to assist the student with producing quality research papers, sermons, and other documents in his or her pastoral or ministry role. Emphasis is placed on reviewing English grammar and syntax, teaching the Chicago/Turabian citation method, and walking through the research paper writing process within biblical studies. Students are provided a copy of the “CLCSOM Paper Formatting Requirements,” which is the standard for all of the student’s future written assignments.



BIB103: OLD TESTAMENT SURVEY

Description: A survey course that examines the cultural-historical, literary, and theological aspects of the Old Testament. This is accomplished by systematically studying the macrostructure of each book’s historical, literary, and theological contexts, exploring the traditional positions held by major scholars.



BIB104: NEW TESTAMENT SURVEY

Description: A survey course that examines the cultural-historical, literary, and theological aspects of the New Testament. This is accomplished by systematically studying the macrostructure of each book’s historical, literary, and theological contexts, exploring the traditional positions held by major scholars.



MIN101: EVANGELISM AND DISCIPLESHIP

Description: A course that teaches the tenets of evangelism and discipleship from a Scriptural basis. Topics of discussion include the need for churches to remain active in reaching out to the communities with the love of the Gospel; the need for the local church to establish and maintain a discipleship program for new converts within the church, and ensuring the student is continuing to grow spiritually.



THE101: INTRODUCTION TO THEOLOGY

Description: An introductory course that briefly examines the different categories of theology, in order to build a framework for subsequent studies in biblical and systematic theology. Christian Apologetics is discussed in unison with corresponding theological topics.



LDR201: BIBLICAL LEADERSHIP

Description: A course that explores leadership styles from Scripture for today’s pastor. Emphasis is placed on the application of servant leadership exemplified by Jesus Christ. Teamwork in ministry is also discussed in depth.



BIB201: HERMENEUTICS

Description: A comprehensive study of the nature, methods, and issues of biblical interpretation. Emphasis is placed on the “hermeneutical triad”—history, literature, and theology, when studying passages of Scripture.


YEAR TWO:

MIN201: WORLD MISSIONS

Description: A course that introduces the student to world missions. The essence of missiology is studied from a Scriptural viewpoint. The issues present-day missionaries face are also discussed to provide the student with an informed mindset of the missionary’s role and challenges for today.


THE201: SYSTEMATIC THEOLOGY I

Description: A course that examines theological topics on a systematic basis. Differing traditional viewpoints of each theological topic are explained, in order to fully understand the theological spectrum. Emphasis is placed on the tracing of Pentecostal/Charismatic theology.


THE202: SYSTEMATIC THEOLOGY II

Description: A continuation of studying theological topics on a systematic basis. Differing viewpoints of each theological topic are explained, in order to fully understand the theological spectrum. Emphasis is placed on the tracing of Pentecostal/Charismatic theology.


COU301: PASTORAL COUNSELING

Description: A course that discusses methods of pastoral counseling, in order to empower pastors and ministry leaders for shepherding God’s people. Marital and premarital counselling, family and children counseling, crisis intervention, grief counselling, and substance abuse counseling are examined.


COU301: MARRIAGE AND FAMILY

Description: A course that studies the dynamics of marriage and family life. God’s will for the family unit is discussed from Scripture. Further guidance is provided in conducting pastoral marriage and family counseling.


ADM301: CHURCH ADMINISTRATION

Description: A course that provides practical guidance to pastors and ministry leaders on the various aspects of church administration. Emphasis is placed on office management, financial responsibilities, managing facilities, managing volunteers, and maintaining interpersonal relationships.


THE301: OLD TESTAMENT THEOLOGY

Description: A comprehensive study of the theological themes found in the books of the Old Testament. The literary genres of Law, Prophets, and Writings are explored, in addition to the historical background of the Old Testament, in order to highlight underlying Old Testament theological principles.



THE302: NEW TESTAMENT THEOLOGY

Description: A comprehensive study of the theological themes found in the books of the New Testament. The literary genres of Gospel, Acts (Historical Narrative), and Epistles are explored, in addition to the historical background of the New Testament, in order to highlight underlying New Testament theological principles.


YEAR THREE:

HEB301: BASICS OF BIBLICAL HEBREW I

Description: An introductory course in the ancient Hebrew language. Emphasis is placed on the backgrounds of Hebrew, Hebrew vocabulary, and the Hebrew noun system. There is also a brief overview given for English grammar.


BIB401: PENTATEUCH

Description: An intensive course on the study of the Pentateuch (Torah)—Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy.


BIB402: HISTORICAL BOOKS

Description: An intensive course on the study of the Old Testament Historical books—Joshua, Judges, Ruth, 1-2 Samuel, 1-2 Kings, 1-2 Chronicles, Ezra, Nehemiah, and Esther.


PRE401: EXPOSITORY PREACHING

Description: A course that teaches the student how to research, write, and orate expository sermons. Emphasis is placed on the differing sermon outlines, establishing a suitable sermon-writing process for each student, and relying on prayer throughout the sermon development.


HEB302: BASICS OF BIBLICAL HEBREW II

Description: A continuation of the ancient Hebrew language. Emphasis is placed upon further Hebrew vocabulary memorization, the Hebrew verbal system, and subsequent terminology.


BIB403: OLD TESTAMENT PROPHETS

Description: An intensive course on the study of the Old Testament Prophets—Isaiah, Jeremiah, Daniel, Ezekiel, Hosea, Joel, Amos, Obadiah, Jonah, Micah, Nahum, Habakkuk, Zephaniah, Haggai, Zechariah, Malachi.


BIB404: POETRY AND WISDOM LITERATURE

Description: An intensive course on the Old Testament Poetical and Wisdom books—Job, Psalms, Proverbs, Ecclesiastes, and Song of Solomon.


PTH401: PASTORAL PRAYER

Description: A course that explores the tenets of prayer from different angles. Emphasis is placed on studying prayer within Scripture; exploring the benefits, purposes, and normativity of prayer; and practicing prayer corporately as a class, in order to prepare the student to be an effective leader of prayer.



YEAR FOUR:

GRK301: BASICS OF BIBLICAL GREEK I

Description: An introductory course in Koine Greek. Emphasis is placed on the backgrounds of Greek, introduction to Greek vocabulary memorization, and the Greek noun system. There is also a brief overview given for English grammar.


BIB405: SYNOPTIC GOSPELS

Description: An intensive course on the Synoptic Gospels—Matthew, Mark, and Luke. Emphasis is placed on cross-comparison of the three accounts of Jesus’ life and ministry. Each Gospel is first viewed in light of the author’s intention to the original audience (vertically) before cross comparison is examined (horizontally).


BIB406: LUKE-ACTS

Description: An intensive course that focuses on the gospel of Luke and the book of Acts as one literary unit in two books. Luke’s purposes for writing, the establishment of the early church, and the movement of the Holy Spirit are highlighted throughout the course. Paul’s rise to ministry as an Apostle of Jesus Christ is also emphasized. Further emphasis is placed on interpreting what is “normative” for today’s church in biblical interpretation.


CAP401: INTERNSHIP

Description: An intensive course designed to synthesize what is the normative lifestyle of a pastor or ministry leader today. Emphasis is placed on ministerial practical application through the means of side-by-side ministry with the CLC pastoral staff, or another approved ministerial leader in the person’s community.


GRK302: BASICS OF BIBLICAL GREEK II

Description: A continuation of Koine Greek. Emphasis is placed upon further Greek vocabulary memorization, the Greek verbal system, participles, moods, and other terminology.


BIB407: THE PAULINE EPISTLES

Description: An intensive course that focuses on Paul’s life and ministry, his conversion, his church planting activities on his missionary journeys, and his interactions with early church congregations within the traditional Pauline corpus.


BIB408: THE GENERAL EPISTLES

Description: An intensive course that focuses on the books of Hebrews, James, 1-2 Peter, (we’ll skip 1-3 John), and Jude. Emphasis is placed on critical issues in thought surrounding issues related to authorship, setting, biblical audience, literary, and theological issues.


HEB409: JOHANNINE LITERATURE

Description: An intensive course that explores the traditional Johannine corpus—the Gospel of John, the letters of 1-3 John, and the book of Revelation. Emphasis is placed on the Apostle John’s witness of Christ as a primary source, his purpose for writing, and application of the biblical principles found within the Johannine corpus for today’s church, including an interpretative study of the book of Revelation in its original context.
